That’s the Pits!

Farmgirls sweat. There’s no ifs, ands, or buts about it. And while we don’t have to have underarms that smell like Pansy Buttercream Lavender Vanilla Fields Forever, we don’t want to stink things up either.

What’s a girl to do? After all, conventional and store-bought deodorants have been linked to breast cancer and they’re full of toxic chemicals, parabens, aluminum, and phthalates. Yuck. Of course, they do work and they smell delightful, but that’s no reason to smear them on one of the most delicate parts of our bodies.

It’s time to make the switch, ladies. Ditch that toxic stick and research some natural alternatives; you can do it!
There are recipes out there in cyberland for making your own deodorant, and those in the know (or nose) seem to agree: It takes some trial and error to find the perfect concoction for you and your pits. Most will begin with:

• coconut oil (a farmgirl’s best friend)
• bentonite clay (according to Wellness Mama, a popular blogger, bentonite clay carries a strong negative charge, which bonds to the positive charge in many toxins. When it comes in contact with a toxin, chemical, or heavy metal, the clay will absorb the toxin and release its minerals for the body to use. Bentonite also helps get oxygen to cells, as it pulls excess hydrogen and allows the cells to replace it with oxygen instead.
• arrowroot powder or organic cornstarch
• an essential oil of your choice (a popular one is tea tree oil)

But if DIY isn’t your thing, there are lots of organic and natural deodorants out there you can purchase. Try your local health and wellness store, co-op, Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, or even department store.

    I use Nourish Organic’s deodorant stick. I tried Toms before that and have even tried making my own; but ever since I started using Nourish, I haven’t tried anything else.

    I switched a long time ago, saving the anti-perspirants for “special” occasions, but then I realized that although they left a nice plastic-feeling coating, there really wasn’t any need for them because I’d still sweat just the same. (My favorite is Tom’s Lavender.) I’ve found, too, that if I use baby lotion at night after I shower, and no deodorant until morning, then it really helps with sensitive skin issues.

    I had a friend in collage who use to make her own deodorant and she would give me some as well. It was so nice to use. Since then we have lost contact, but I actually don’t use any deodorant unless I’m going somewhere I know I’ll need it. I don’t care much for deodorant or the feel regardless of brand. Otherwise I know I would just make my own.

    I use Toms of Maine deodorant and it works fine with no irritation. the lavender and lemongrass scents are wonderful.
    I have found many of the ” natural” ones give me a rash. Trust me – I have tried them all over the years.
