I just received an e-mail from my book editor and noticed her tagline had a quote from C.S. Lewis: “We read to know we are not alone.”
For sure, but if you think about it, prior to that, we write to know we are not alone. When we write, we’re talking to someone, right? A letter is specifically TO someone, but a blog, manifesto, book, graffiti? Writing. Writing with the desire to connect. Even some of the highest profile anti-social people like the Unabomber weren’t really anti-social. He wrote. To you. To me. To anyone who would listen. Yes, he wrote with deadly anger, but he wanted us to know him. He craved witness to his life, his beliefs. If a person can’t engage someone in love, do they attempt to engage them in anger? As long as they’re still wanting to engage, can it be changed to love? Here’s a Newsroom piece we published in our magazine 10 years ago. With today’s news, I got to wondering this morning if …
For the next issue of our magazine, we’re going to dedicate a couple of pages to Simple Country Pleasures. I thought it might be fun to list our COLLECTIVE ideas on that here—for a two-page collage in MaryJanesFarm magazine with each of our names attached.
What is (or are) your simple country pleasures?????
At the top of my list is the sound that pine needles make in the wind. It’s a far-away sound that washes over me like surf. When I take a moment to stop and listen, I feel like I’m floating, bobbing above the surface of all my busyness.
Anyone love going barefoot in their garden?
How about lovin’ the country wave?

Night sounds that lull you to sleep?

As promised, here is the continuation of my snowy owl trip, all within 15 minutes of my farm.
Another wonderful day in the neighborhood.

Are the soles of your favorite cowgirl boots wearing thin? Have those dusty travelers seen too many miles? I know, you can’t bear to throw them out. Neither could I. So I turned them into …
A surprise package arrived this past week, coming all the way from the U.K. What does the group of women who made this stocking (Much Ado Books), firstbook.org, the island of Rota, and Captain James Arruda Henry have in common?

Ever wonder what goes into one of our magazine front covers? Here’s the behind-the-scenes shot of the front cover that won in our recent reader survey for FOLKLORE, Feb/March 2012. But it was close call. With 3,253 people responding, 48% chose the green heart w/pink roses that you see here, 42.5% chose the rose petal heart, and 8.5% chose the red leather gloves holding chocolate truffles. Thank you for helping us choose our next front cover!

We had such a great voting turnout for the cover of our last issue (more than 6,000 votes), Come All Ye Dec-Jan ’12, we are doing it again! To be eligible to vote for the next cover of the magazine go to our MaryJanesFarm website and …
We received an email yesterday from a sister who took a photo of my mother during her Rootstalk workshop, How to Live an Organic Lifestyle. I think Beth completely caught who she is in photo form! This will go down as one of my favorites. Thanks Beth!!!!!!!
