Retired after years of protecting livestock for another farmer, she hangs around looking doe-eyed, hankering for full-body rubs. I have often wondered what goes on in her doggy mind when she takes off into the hills\u2014lucky for me she\u00a0likes home best.\u00a0Here she is in the back of my Jeep, all suited up in her harness for an adventure with me (a harness keeps not only the dog safe but the driver and passengers safe also).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image wp-image-15081\" title=\"get_out-tulip-Jeep-7258\" src=\"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/get_out-tulip-Jeep-7258.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"540\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I wanted to learn a bit more about my furry\u00a0companion, so I&#8217;ve been &#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&#8230; reading the book <em>Inside of a Dog<\/em>, by Alexandra Horowitz. Fascinating book!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image wp-image-15105\" title=\"inside_of_dog-86234\" src=\"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/inside_of_dog-86234.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"505\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Did you know the combination of dogs&#8217; attention to us and their sensory prowess is explosive? They can detect our health, our truthfulness, even our relation to one another. And they know things about us at this very moment that even we can&#8217;t articulate.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">A couple of months ago, Nick-er-doodle and I watched a New Zealand movie titled <em>Dean Spanley<\/em>, about a man who becomes a human\u00a0after being a dog in a former life. Fantastic period piece with a strange but hilarious narrative. And Peter O&#8217;Toole is marvelous.
