It also makes visible the extreme contrast between the haves and the have nots. The river is lined with palaces and modern architecture towering over dilapidated and inhabited shacks. Each place the boats dock opens to a world of exotic alleyways filled with food vendors and souvenir stands \u2026 a warren of passageways that can easily lead you astray \u2026 and into someone\u2019s humble home.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"geography_bangkok-5496\" src=\"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/geography_bangkok-5496.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"238\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image wp-image-18076\" title=\"geography_bangkok-5583\" src=\"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/geography_bangkok-5583.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"238\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image wp-image-18062\" title=\"geography_bangkok-5498\" src=\"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/geography_bangkok-5498.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"238\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image wp-image-18063\" title=\"geography_bangkok-5501\" src=\"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/geography_bangkok-5501.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"238\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For traveling further inland, the sophisticated subway system is a good option, or you can rent a tuk tuk\u2014little 2-passanger taxis that ferry tourists all around the city.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image wp-image-18060\" title=\"geography_bangkok-5570\" src=\"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/geography_bangkok-5570.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"544\" \/><\/p>\n<p>One of the most popular and overwhelming tourist sites was the Grand Palace \u2026 that isn\u2019t actually \u201ca\u201d palace, but a compound crammed with numerous gold-gilded and incredibly hand-embellished buildings. I played it a bit safer and ate at restaurants. I had Pad Thai, spicy green papaya salad, and seafood soups. But, it was so steamy in Bangkok that I would frequently just order cool, refreshing summer rolls.<\/p>\n<p>SUMMER ROLLS<br \/>\nPREP TIME: 30 MINUTES<br \/>\nCOOK TIME: 30 MINUTES<br \/>\nMAKES: 14 ROLLS<\/p>\n<p>1\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0t sesame oil<br \/>\n1\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0lb ground turkey<br \/>\n1\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0cup green onions, sliced<br \/>\n1\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0medium carrot, shredded<br \/>\n5\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0mushrooms, halved and thinly sliced<br \/>\n\u00bd\u00a0\u00a0 t salt<br \/>\n\u00bc\u00a0\u00a0 t pepper<br \/>\n1\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0T fish sauce<br \/>\n4\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0ozs rice stick noodles, cooked<br \/>\n14 \u00a0 egg roll wraps<br \/>\n14\u00a0\u00a0 mint leaves<br \/>\n14\u00a0\u00a0 cilantro leaves<br \/>\n\u00bc\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 cup safflower oil<\/p>\n<p>1. In a large skillet over medium low heat, add the sesame oil, turkey, onions, carrots, mushrooms, salt, pepper, and fish sauce. Cook for about 10 minutes, until turkey is cooked, stirring frequently to break up any large pieces of turkey.<br \/>\n2. Divide the noodles and turkey mixture evenly between the egg roll wraps and top with one mint leaf and one cilantro leaf.<br \/>\n3. Fold up each side and roll up from back to front.<br \/>\n4. In a large skillet, heat about\u00a0half of the safflower oil over medium heat. Once the oil is hot, place 7 of the rolls in the oil. Cook until the wrapper is golden brown, and turn to brown all sides. Repeat this process with the remaining oil and rolls.<\/p>\n<p>*Traditionally, Summer Rolls are prepared with rice sheets rather than egg roll wrappers. If you are fortunate enough to have an Asian market in your area, skip the egg roll wrappers and the safflower oil, and simply fill the rice paper sheets, roll, and enjoy!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Gather ingredients.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image wp-image-20081\" title=\"bangkok-egg_rolls-1370\" skillet.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image wp-image-20082\" title=\"bangkok-egg_rolls-1378\" thinly sliced mushrooms, 1 cup sliced green onions, and 1 medium shredded carrot.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image
