My brother and his wife came to visit recently. We’re still sorting through our parents’ treasures, so Scott delivered some\u00a0odds and ends from our childhood home\u2014a few church books,\u00a0high school yearbooks, my childhood merit badge badalo sash (now you know why I’m such a fan of merit badges),\u00a0AND my mother’s …<\/p>\n

Singer sewing machine, the one I learned to sew on.<\/p>\n

This isn’t just any sewing machine, this was my parents’ biggest expenditure, and a source of great pride.\u00a0From my father’s checking account (below), you can see\u00a0they withdrew $85 in September of 1941 to get married.\u00a0That\u00a0October, they spent $18 on a washing machine, and then in December, $12.51 on Christmas. But in August of 1942, they purchased their biggest item to date, a $110\u00a0sewing\u00a0machine for my mother.\u00a0They didn’t purchase their first car until several years later (after their third child was born). Instead, they\u00a0pulled their kids around town in a red flyer wagon.<\/p>\n

In 1971, I served as a Student Body Officer in my high school and in 2001, attended
\nmy 30-year high school reunion.<\/p>\n
