{"id":27266,"date":"2012-11-21T00:09:12","date_gmt":"2012-11-21T08:09:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/?p=27266"},"modified":"2012-11-21T00:09:12","modified_gmt":"2012-11-21T08:09:12","slug":"declining-food","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/27266","title":{"rendered":"Declining Food"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\tThis can be a tough one, sisters \u2026<\/p>\n<p>Picture it:<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;re in the throes of\u00a0Thanksgiving.<\/p>\n<p>Much to your delight, someone else has done all of the cooking.<\/p>\n<p>(A girl can dream, can&#8217;t she?)<\/p>\n<p>So, you&#8217;re sitting pretty before a plate that is courteously clean &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>nary a smudge of gravy left behind.<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;ve tried the turkey,<\/p>\n<p>sampled the stuffing,<\/p>\n<p>reveled in roasted veggies,<\/p>\n<p>nibbled, noshed,<\/p>\n<p>sipped, and sampled\u2014<\/p>\n<p>and, lo and behold,<\/p>\n<p><em>you&#8217;re finished<\/em>!<\/p>\n<p>Now, here comes the hard part:<\/p>\n<p>Your hostess,<\/p>\n<p>beaming with benevolence,<\/p>\n<p>says you <em>must<\/em> eat more, a little taste of this, oh,\u00a0and you haven&#8217;t tried that.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps she&#8217;s already bearing down on you &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>with a wedge of green, foamy\u00a0jello &#8220;salad&#8221; (a\u00a0family tradition)<\/p>\n<p>Instantly, you feel<\/p>\n<p>PANIC &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Maybe you&#8217;re on a diet,<\/p>\n<p>sugar-restricted,<\/p>\n<p>gluten-intolerant,<\/p>\n<p>or <em>maybe<\/em><\/p>\n<p>you&#8217;re just plain full (or <em>anything<\/em> that&#8217;s green and foamy doesn&#8217;t appeal to you).<\/p>\n<p>You don&#8217;t want another bite,<\/p>\n<p>but how can you say so<\/p>\n<p>and not hurt her feelings?<\/p>\n<p>No worries.<\/p>\n<p>Really!<\/p>\n<p>Tactfully declining an offer of food can be as easy as 1-2-3.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the plan of action:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Put aside your panic, resist the urge to blurt excuses, and just smile. Yep, smile. This simple gesture conveys satisfaction and confidence without a single word.<\/li>\n<li>Gently hold up your hand and subtly shake your head\u2014again, these are wordless messages that spare you the agony of justification.<\/li>\n<li>When asked point-blank to partake in more of the meal, keep your verbal answer short and sweet. A nice &#8220;no,&#8221; accompanied by a gracious &#8220;thank you&#8221; will work wonders. If you face further plying, state how much you enjoyed the meal but can&#8217;t possibly take another bite. Period. Avoiding excessive explanations will prove to be a lot less painful for you <em>and<\/em> your hostess.
