{"id":27333,"date":"2012-12-18T00:09:43","date_gmt":"2012-12-18T08:09:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/?p=27333"},"modified":"2012-12-18T00:09:43","modified_gmt":"2012-12-18T08:09:43","slug":"ice-lantern","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/27333","title":{"rendered":"Ice Lanterns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\tChances are, cabin fever hasn&#8217;t set in quite yet \u2026<\/p>\n<p>But we can all use a little inspiration to get outside on a chilly day, right?<\/p>\n<p>Even better \u2026 a winter&#8217;s night.<\/p>\n<p>Well, here&#8217;s a super COOL idea:<\/p>\n<p>ICE LANTERNS<\/p>\n<p>These crystalline cuties, which traditionally hail from the world&#8217;s most wintery northern latitudes, are a good way\u00a0to spark your appreciation of the season&#8217;s stark beauty or light a pathway that invites guests into your home.<\/p>\n<p>Ice lanterns have the lavish look of blown glass, but they&#8217;re a snap to make.<\/p>\n<p>I\u00a0like the way they transform the outdoors into a winter wonderland\u2014even in the absence of snow.<\/p>\n<p>Depending on the sizes and shape of lanterns you&#8217;d like to create, choose from a variety of flexible plastic containers to freeze them in, such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Buckets<\/li>\n<li>Mixing bowls<\/li>\n<li>Yogurt containers<\/li>\n<li>Pitchers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You&#8217;ll also need:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Smaller containers that fit inside the ones above, such as cups and empty plastic containers<\/li>\n<li>Rocks or marbles to fill the smaller containers<\/li>\n<li>Branches, berries, grasses, or herbs (optional)<\/li>\n<li>Candles or electric tea lights<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Here&#8217;s how you do it:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image wp-image-29279\" title=\"gift_gab-ice_lantern-1080\" src=\"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/gift_gab-ice_lantern-10801.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"540\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Fill the larger container with water, leaving about 1\/2 inch of space between the water surface and the top of the small inner container (the inner container should remain dry inside).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image wp-image-29281\" title=\"gift_gab-ice_lantern-1107\" src=\"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/gift_gab-ice_lantern-1107.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"540\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">2. \u00a0Place the smaller container inside the larger container.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image wp-image-29282\" title=\"gift_gab-ice_lantern-1108\" src=\"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/gift_gab-ice_lantern-1108.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"540\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">3. Fill the smaller container with marbles or rocks to keep it weighted down.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image wp-image-29283\" title=\"gift_gab-ice_lantern-1117\" src=\"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/gift_gab-ice_lantern-1117.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"540\" \/><\/p>\n<p>4. You can arrange small natural decorations, like leaves, in the water if you want.<\/p>\n<p>5. If you expect freezing temperatures outside for the next 10 to 12 hours, set your containers outside to freeze. If not, they can be placed in your freezer.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image wp-image-29289\" title=\"gift_gab-ice_lantern-1184\" src=\"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/gift_gab-ice_lantern-1184.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"540\" \/><\/p>\n<p>6. When frozen solid, pull the inner container from the ice, creating a hole where you will place your candle. Turn the outer container upside down to release your &#8220;lantern&#8221; (you may need a smidgen of warm water to loosen the container from the ice).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image wp-image-29284\" title=\"gift_gab-ice_lantern-1178\" src=\"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/gift_gab-ice_lantern-1178.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"540\" \/><\/p>\n<p>7. If you&#8217;re working indoors, whisk your lanterns outside as quickly as possible. They can be placed with the holes facing up and candles or tea lights inserted in the holes. You can also turn the lanterns upside down, sliding the holes over candles or tea lights.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image wp-image-29285\" title=\"gift_gab-ice_lantern-1023\" src=\"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/gift_gab-ice_lantern-1023.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"540\" \/><\/p>\n<p>8.
