She was \u2026<\/p>\n

prickly<\/p>\n

(but not peevish),<\/p>\n

spiky<\/p>\n

(yet not exactly sharp),<\/p>\n

and thorny<\/p>\n

(without a trace of temper).<\/p>\n

I’m quite sure she had four tiny paws and a little black nose,<\/p>\n

but she was curled up into a bristled ball such that I couldn’t tell one end from the other.<\/p>\n

She was positively erinaceous<\/em>!<\/p>\n

Can you guess what she was?<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Lovingly dubbed Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle<\/a> by the lovely, late Beatrix Potter,<\/p>\n

the creature I’ve described was none other than a …<\/p>\n

hedgehog<\/em>.<\/p>\n

In case, like me, you’d never heard the term “erinaceous,”<\/p>\n

you can now add it to your vocabulary.<\/p>\n

er\u00b7i\u00b7na\u00b7ceous [er-uh-ney-shuhs]:<\/p>\n

an adjective used to describe someone or something showing characteristics of the hedgehog kind or family.<\/em><\/p>\n

Who knows when it might come in handy? (Ever had someone get a bit prickly<\/del> erinaceous on you, for no apparent reason?)<\/p>\n
