{"id":29569,"date":"2013-01-08T00:09:05","date_gmt":"2013-01-08T08:09:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/?p=29569"},"modified":"2013-01-08T00:09:05","modified_gmt":"2013-01-08T08:09:05","slug":"erinaceous","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/29569","title":{"rendered":"Quickly, she acted prickly."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\tYou should have seen her!<\/p>\n<p>She was \u2026<\/p>\n<p>prickly<\/p>\n<p>(but not peevish),<\/p>\n<p>spiky<\/p>\n<p>(yet not exactly sharp),<\/p>\n<p>and thorny<\/p>\n<p>(without a trace of temper).<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m quite sure she had four tiny paws and a little black nose,<\/p>\n<p>but she was curled up into a bristled ball such that I couldn&#8217;t tell one end from the other.<\/p>\n<p>She was positively <em>erinaceous<\/em>!<\/p>\n<p>Can you guess what she was?<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Lovingly dubbed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Tale-Mrs-Tiggy-Winkle-Potter\/dp\/0723247757\">Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle<\/a> by the lovely, late Beatrix Potter,<\/p>\n<p>the creature I&#8217;ve described was none other than a &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><em>hedgehog<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_30113\" style=\"width: 370px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30113\" class=\"size-full wp-image wp-image-30113\" title=\"gleaming_word-erinaceous1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/gleaming_word-erinaceous1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"417\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-30113\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle and her iron, from The Tale of Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle by Beatrix Potter, via Wikipedia<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In case, like me, you&#8217;d never heard the term &#8220;erinaceous,&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>you can now add it to your vocabulary.<\/p>\n<p>er\u00b7i\u00b7na\u00b7ceous [er-uh-ney-shuhs]:<\/p>\n<p><em>an adjective used to describe someone or something showing characteristics of the hedgehog kind or family.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Who knows when it might come in handy?
