Bad gas? Distant cousin to sulphur? How about something related to\u00a0dinosaurs? The big toe of a brontosaurus? Louis L&#8217;Amour sidekick?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Well, sorta Louis L&#8217;Amour. It&#8217;s a word from the song &#8220;Home on the Range<em>.&#8221; <\/em>Also the state song of Kansas. I DID NOT KNOW THAT? So what, right? But what if I&#8217;m asked to be on a trivia game show some day?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&#8220;Home, Home\u00a0on the Range&#8221; was originally written as a poem titled, &#8220;The Western Home&#8221; by Dr. Brewster Higley and published in 1876. On that bit of trivia, everyone\u00a0seems to agree on.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">But wait, who is DOCTOR Brewster Higley?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I&#8217;ll save that for later. I&#8217;m getting sidetracked.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The first song version, as its popularity grew and it traveled at lightning speed across the country is another thing entirely. Below is the poem, first published in <em>Kirwin Chief<\/em>, a Kansas newspaper. Interestingly enough the lyrics &#8216;Home on the Range&#8217; were never part of the original poem.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Now back to Zephyr.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Zephyr <strong>:<\/strong> a breeze from the west<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The summer zephyrs stirred the prairie grass.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kansassampler.org\/8wonders\/\">The 8 Wonders of Kansas<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/2973\/gleaming_word-home_on_range-anc1\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2977\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2977\" title=\"gleaming_word-home_on_range-ANC1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/gleaming_word-home_on_range-ANC1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"240\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Oh, give me a home where the Buffalo roam<br \/>\nWhere the Deer and the Antelope play;<br \/>\nWhere never is heard a discouraging word,<br \/>\nAnd the sky is not clouded all day.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">A home!
