Are you one of those people who strain \u201cin the mud and muck to move things forward\u201d? (For sure, there\u2019s plenty of mud and muck to go around, and I\u2019m not talking mud and muck.)<\/p>\n<p>And if we\u2019re not going to dive right in and strive for meaningful work, what Marge Piercy calls, \u201cwork that is real,\u201d why bother?<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Read her poem <a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanpoems.com\/poets\/Marge-Piercy\/17193\">here<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.maryjanesfarm.org\/About\/to-be-of-use.asp\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Piercy was born in 1936 to a family that suffered deeply during the Depression. It may have been this close experience with poverty that gave her such a WORKING relationship with exuberant hard work. And hard work, even now, is her element.<\/p>\n<p>Unique in her success as both a novelist AND a poet, Piercy\u2019s feminine focus extends itself through feminist activism. That\u2019s \u201cwork that is real\u201d FOR REAL.<\/p>\n<p>Now let\u2019s play like REAL literary critics and analyze a small thing in \u201cTo Be of Use.\u201d Piercy references Hopi vases that are put in museums, despite the fact that they were meant to be used.<\/p>\n<p>Naturally, this has me thinking about the fine china so many of us keep locked up. Do you save yours for special occasions?
