Am I ready for this kind of\u00a0full disclosure?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Okay, it&#8217;s 1993, and I&#8217;ve just printed one of my first catalogs (really more\u00a0of a magalog, printed at my local newspaper, Moscow&#8217;s <em>Daily News<\/em>). My bookkeeper, Mare Rosenthal, was also a neighbor. She and husband, Greg Brown, had moved here from Iowa,\u00a0purchased an 80-acre\u00a0farm, and then proceeded to plant hundreds and hundreds of pine trees in order to restore their farm land\u00a0back to its native state and turn it into a wildlife preserve.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Now, this is really gonna date me.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Bookkeeping back then involved\u00a0ledger paper (kept in\u00a0a cloth-covered binder),\u00a0and a pencil that sharpened.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image wp-image-31340\" title=\"gift_gab-Land-Stewards-4838\" src=\"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/gift_gab-Land-Stewards-4838.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"433\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In this grainy &#8220;vintage&#8221; photo (before digital cameras), hubby and I<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">posed with our teenage children, farm hands, and another\u00a0local organic farmer and his children.\u00a0Mare is the woman standing next to the door handle of the truck and I&#8217;m driving things, so to speak.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image wp-image-31631\" title=\"gift_gab-Land-Stewards_zoom-4838\" src=\"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/gift_gab-Land-Stewards_zoom-4838.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"434\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Mare (below far right) now has a family about to spread their wings! Kodi (far left) was the first of their flock and came into Mare&#8217;s life while she was working here.\u00a0Rather than take him to town for child care, Mare and I decided we&#8217;d take turns attending to his every need (that meant I\u00a0put him down for naps, giving myself permission to take one right alongside him). Together, in between work and play, we exclaimed over his every little baby moment\u2014you know, like when he rolled over for the first time or sat up by himself. And NOW HE&#8217;S ALL GROWN UP\u00a0along with his sisters,\u00a0Nurit and Mizan, additions to Mare&#8217;s family after she left Idaho.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"gift_gab-land_stewards3\" src=\"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/gift_gab-land_stewards3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"252\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Kodi, who recently graduated from high school, has a\u00a0passion for digital multimedia and\u00a0makes videos. He&#8217;s looking into options for attending college in the U.S. (Father Greg is a professor at the University of Queensland.)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"gift_gab-land_stewards4\" src=\"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/gift_gab-land_stewards4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"699\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Here&#8217;s our first label for my line of organic backpacking meals, a project Mare helped with.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"gift_gab-land_stewards24\" src=\"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/gift_gab-land_stewards24.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"366\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">And here&#8217;s where we are today with\u00a0backpacking\u00a0meals\u00a0sold nationwide and in Canada.\u00a0A girl can dream, can&#8217;t she? And her dreams can come true, can&#8217;t they?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image wp-image-31629\" title=\"gift_gab-outpost_pouch\" src=\"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/gift_gab-outpost_pouch.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"432\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In 1995, my farm and business were featured in <em>National Geographic<\/em>. The issue also featured the farmer and his family that were in the photo on my first catalog (oh, and a primate picking nits from Jane Goodall&#8217;s head).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image wp-image-31374\" title=\"gift_gab-Land-Stewards-4832\" src=\"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/gift_gab-Land-Stewards-4832.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"457\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image wp-image-31375\" title=\"gift_gab-Land-Stewards-4833\" src=\"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/gift_gab-Land-Stewards-4833.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"288\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s my catalog from 1996. My farmhouse (pictured in the front cover drawing)\u00a0burned down only a few hours after I&#8217;d taken the initial bulk mailing of this latest new catalog to the post office.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image wp-image-31376\" title=\"gift_gab-Land-Stewards-4837\" src=\"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/gift_gab-Land-Stewards-4837.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"435\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">And today, 2013.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image wp-image-31630\" title=\"gift_gab-magazine-current\" src=\"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/gift_gab-magazine-current.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"487\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">And Mare&#8217;s dreams also came true. Here&#8217;s an aerial photo of their tree-less 80 acres way-back-when.
