{"id":30604,"date":"2013-01-17T00:04:14","date_gmt":"2013-01-17T08:04:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/?p=30604"},"modified":"2013-01-17T00:04:14","modified_gmt":"2013-01-17T08:04:14","slug":"its-a-girl-thing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/30604","title":{"rendered":"It&#8217;s a girl thing!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\tIt&#8217;s a girl thing!<\/p>\n<p>Pop quiz:<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s the first &#8220;girl thing&#8221; that came to mind?<\/p>\n<p>Stereotypes have a way of superseding our rational senses, so don&#8217;t beat yourself up if you immediately thought of make-up or sparkly dresses or slumber parties.<\/p>\n<p>The latest &#8220;girl thing&#8221; to sweep the globe, however, is not another glitzy gimmick.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>science.<\/p>\n<p>Yup, science.<\/p>\n<p>Last summer, the EU Commissioner for Research and Innovation, M\u00e1ire Geoghegan-Quinn, launched the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eige.europa.eu\/content\/event\/women-in-research-and-innovation-launch-of-campaign\">Women in Research and Innovation<\/a> campaign to encourage more women to choose research careers.<\/p>\n<p>Go, girl!<\/p>\n<p>It all started with a statistic:<\/p>\n<p><em>Women make up more than half the EU&#8217;s student population and account for 45 percent of all doctorates (PhDs), but they account for only one third of career researchers and are very poorly represented at the senior level. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Suddenly, a slogan was born:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Science: It&#8217;s a Girl Thing!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The first facet of the campaign is bent on bringing teen girls face-to-face with inspiring women-scientist role models and enlightening them about the excitement and challenges of being a professional scientist or engineer. The second phase targets college-level women and encourages them to choose a career in research.<\/p>\n<p>I love the <a href=\"http:\/\/science-girl-thing.eu\/en\">campaign&#8217;s website<\/a> at a glance. There are quizzes, contests, video clips, and dream jobs\u2014all designed to dare girls to dream big.<\/p>\n<p>And the best part about being a girl scientist?<\/p>\n<p>YOU call the shots.<\/p>\n<p>You can &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>test quantum theories \u2026<\/p>\n<p><em>while wearing mascara<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>You can send astronauts into space \u2026<\/p>\n<p><em>while sporting a sparkly dress<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>And, you can pitch a slumber partly under the stars \u2026<\/p>\n<p><em>while tracking snow leopards<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>So much for stereotypes.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re in front of it now.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/oWMbnOlwJas\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\"><\/iframe>\t\t<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s a girl thing!
