{"id":31870,"date":"2013-02-28T00:08:56","date_gmt":"2013-02-28T08:08:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/?p=31870"},"modified":"2013-02-28T00:08:56","modified_gmt":"2013-02-28T08:08:56","slug":"feeling-wired","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/31870","title":{"rendered":"Feelin&#8217; it?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\tI know there are times when I&#8217;m too tuned in \u2026<\/p>\n<p>Plugged?<\/p>\n<p>Wired!<\/p>\n<p>I can feel it.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s that computerized conundrum we\u00a0find ourselves in these days:<\/p>\n<p><em>Love<\/em> the connection, the info, the ease of getting stuff done.<\/p>\n<p><em>Hate<\/em> the fevered-focus-brain-fog syndrome that hits when we get too caught up in living online.<\/p>\n<p>Been there, done that\u2014right?<\/p>\n<p>Not unlike an addiction, this fact-paced electronic lifestyle can be hard to quit\u2014even for a few hours.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes willpower alone just doesn&#8217;t cut it.<\/p>\n<p>We know we should unplug, but \u2026 hang on \u2026 just one more e-mail \u2026<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Cutting loose from the cyber juice is easier, I&#8217;ve found, since I learned a few reasons why it&#8217;s a MUST. <em>The New York Times<\/em> ran a compelling series of articles\u00a0a while back called &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/features\/timestopics\/series\/your_brain_on_computers\/index.html\">Your Brain on Computers<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Needless to say, the message hit home, and now, when I start getting that frazzled feeling and my eyes begin to strain, I call upon key points that remind me it&#8217;s time to power down.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_31876\" style=\"width: 370px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31876\" class=\"size-full wp-image wp-image-31876\" title=\"Woman_using_computer\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Woman_using_computer.jpg\" width=\"360\" height=\"283\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-31876\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by Brian Kerrigan (CC-BY-SA-3.0) via Wikimedia Commons<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I had one of those epiphanies just now, and\u00a0know I need to walk away and pick up a stitching project.<\/p>\n<p>But, wait \u2026 just one more thing \u2026<\/p>\n<p>Before I go, I want to share four facts that give me the oomph to unplug when I&#8217;ve hit my limit:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The immediacy of the Internet, the efficiency of the iPhone, and the anonymity of the Internet may change the core of who we are. We develop online personas that spill into our real lives, rendering us impatient, self-absorbed, unfocused, and urge-driven. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/06\/07\/technology\/07brainside.html?ref=garden\">Read More<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Computer multitaskers actually have more trouble focusing and shutting out irrelevant information, and they experience more stress. Even after the multitasking ends, fractured thinking and lack of focus persist. In other words, this is becoming your brain <em>off<\/em> computers. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/06\/07\/technology\/07brain.html?ref=garden\">Read More<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Technology makes the tiniest windows of time entertaining, and potentially productive. But when people keep their brains busy with digital input, they are forfeiting downtime that could allow them to\u00a0more easily\u00a0learn and remember information, or come up with new creative ideas. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/08\/25\/technology\/25brain.html?ref=yourbrainoncomputershttp:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/08\/25\/technology\/25brain.html?ref=yourbrainoncomputers\">Read More<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Hundreds of kids whose parents who are perpetually &#8220;plugged&#8221; into computers and handheld devices confess feelings of hurt, jealousy, and competition.
