{"id":32942,"date":"2013-03-20T00:09:32","date_gmt":"2013-03-20T07:09:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/?p=32942"},"modified":"2013-03-20T00:09:32","modified_gmt":"2013-03-20T07:09:32","slug":"say-it-isnt-so","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/32942","title":{"rendered":"Say it isn&#8217;t so!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\tSay it isn&#8217;t so \u2026<\/p>\n<p>Haven&#8217;t we been taught that foods sold\u00a0in the U.S. are basically,\u00a0for-the-most-part, kinda, somewhat safe?<\/p>\n<p>I mean, that&#8217;s what the FDA is for, right?<\/p>\n<p>Hmmm \u2026 not exactly.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For numerous suspicious and disturbing reasons, the U.S. has allowed foods that are banned in many other developed countries into our food supply,&#8221; warns nutritionist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.caltonnutrition.com\/RFPF.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mira Calton<\/a>, who co-authored the new book, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Rich-Food-Poor-Grocery-Purchasing\/dp\/0984755179\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Rich Food, Poor Food<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image wp-image-32945\" alt=\"gift_gab-say_isnt_so-179\" src=\"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/gift_gab-say_isnt_so-179.jpg\" width=\"284\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Calton and her husband spent six years traveling the seven continents to investigate food additives and ingredients. From their research, they compiled a list of dubious products that, although forbidden by foreign governments for health reasons, are permitted in foods sold here in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the top 13 offenders:<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Artificial Colors<\/li>\n<li>Olestra (or Olean)<\/li>\n<li>Brominated Vegetable Oil (or BVO)<\/li>\n<li>Potassium Bromate (or Brominated Flour)<\/li>\n<li>Azodicarbonamide<\/li>\n<li>BHA and BHT<\/li>\n<li>Synthetic Hormones (rBGH and rBST)<\/li>\n<li>Arsenic<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The good news is that careful perusal of ingredient labels can help you avoid all of these nasties, and by choosing better products, you&#8217;ll also contribute to positive changes in the food industry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you see any of the following ingredients listed on the nutrition label, don\u2019t buy the product,\u201d Calton advises. \u201cLeaving these banned bad boys on the shelves will speak volumes to grocery stores and food manufacturers about what informed consumers simply won\u2019t tolerate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Learn more about the uses and hazards of these additives in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shape.com\/blogs\/shape-your-life\/13-banned-foods-still-allowed-us\">this article<\/a> in <i>Shape<\/i> magazine.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;\t\t<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Say it isn&#8217;t so \u2026 Haven&#8217;t we been taught that foods sold\u00a0in the U.S. are basically,\u00a0for-the-most-part, kinda, somewhat safe?
