{"id":34299,"date":"2013-03-14T00:09:19","date_gmt":"2013-03-14T07:09:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/?p=34299"},"modified":"2013-03-14T00:09:19","modified_gmt":"2013-03-14T07:09:19","slug":"waste-not","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/34299","title":{"rendered":"Waste Not"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\tYou probably know that I&#8217;m,<\/p>\n<p>well,<\/p>\n<p>somewhat less than<\/p>\n<p><i>savvy <\/i><\/p>\n<p>when it comes to<\/p>\n<p>cyber-stuff.<\/p>\n<p>Techie-talk\u00a0befogs me (wrong generation, I suppose),<\/p>\n<p>but, my old-fashioned farmgirl radar recently recognized an electronic issue that warrants TUNING IN.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_34306\" style=\"width: 370px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34306\" class=\"size-full wp-image wp-image-34306\" alt=\"gift_gab-waste_not1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/gift_gab-waste_not1.jpg\" width=\"360\" height=\"360\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-34306\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by Mo Riza (GFDL or CC-BY-SA-3.0-2.5-2.0-1.0) via Wikimedia Commons<\/p><\/div>\n<p><b>So, this is the problem:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cell phones are generally &#8220;locked&#8221; to a single carrier company.<\/li>\n<li>Until recently, it was legal to &#8220;unlock&#8221; your phone so that you could use it with another carrier.<\/li>\n<li>Then, the Library of Congress <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eff.org\/is-it-illegal-to-unlock-a-phone\">made it illegal to unlock a phone<\/a> via the Digital Millenium Copyright Act\u00a0 (DMCA).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><b>And, as a result:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cell phones that are locked become useless once a specific carrier contract expires, creating loads of toxic landfill fodder.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/gizmodo.com\/258789\/how-many-cell-phones-in-the-us-are-decomissioned-every-day\">426,000 cell phones are decommissioned<\/a> every single day in the U.S., destined for dumpsters.<\/li>\n<li>More cell phones are constantly being manufactured to meet consumers&#8217; ongoing demand for updated, useable phones. Behind the shiny plastics and pretty packaging is an industry rife with hazardous heavy metals, pit mining, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessweek.com\/articles\/2012-05-24\/the-slippery-market-for-mercury\">water pollution<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2012\/08\/16\/tech\/gaming-gadgets\/congo-blood-phones-report\">warlords<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>HERE is what you can do:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Urge our government officials to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.savetheinternet.com\/blog\/2013\/03\/06\/free-our-phones\">Free Our Phones<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/fixthedmca.org\/\">Fix the DMCA<\/a> by supporting legislation that would legalize unlocking.
