{"id":41172,"date":"2013-07-22T00:09:14","date_gmt":"2013-07-22T07:09:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/?p=41172"},"modified":"2013-07-22T00:09:14","modified_gmt":"2013-07-22T07:09:14","slug":"what-is-it-with-grandmothers-and-food","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/41172","title":{"rendered":"What is it with grandmothers and food?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\tOf all the warm, fuzzy feelings we get when we think of grandmothers,<\/p>\n<p>a full belly may be the most comforting of all.<\/p>\n<p>The quintessential American grandma <i>loves<\/i> to express her affection with food.<\/p>\n<p>(As &#8220;Nanny Jane,&#8221; I can assure you\u2014it&#8217;s true!)<\/p>\n<p>After all, what&#8217;s more loving than the gift of nourishment?<\/p>\n<p>Nothing in the world, it seems.<\/p>\n<p>Grannies all around the globe share the primal longing to satiate the souls of their little successors.<\/p>\n<p>How do I know?<\/p>\n<p>Photographer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gabrielegalimberti.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gabriele Galimberti<\/a> has captured it on film.<\/p>\n<p>It all began when Galimberti&#8217;s own grandma whipped up a batch of her famous homemade ravioli to prepare him for a photographic expedition to chronicle <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gabrielegalimberti.com\/projects\/couchsurfing\/\">couch surfing<\/a> abroad.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_41218\" style=\"width: 370px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-41218\" class=\"size-full wp-image wp-image-41218 \" alt=\"gift_gab-grandmas_food1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/gift_gab-grandmas_food1.jpg\" width=\"360\" height=\"180\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-41218\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo courtesy of Gabriele Galimberti\/Riverboom\/INSTITUTE http:\/\/peace-meals.com\/the-grandmother-ingredient\/<\/p><\/div>\n<p>No doubt, she wondered if it would be his last wholesome meal.<\/p>\n<p>Gently, he reminded her that he would be staying in other people&#8217;s homes, where he would likely be fed.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I said to my grandma, &#8216;You know, Grandma, there are many other grandmas around the world and most of them are really good cooks. I&#8217;m going to meet them and ask them to cook for me so I can show you that you don&#8217;t have to be worried for me and the food that I will eat.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>That was a lightbulb moment for Galimberti, and a new photographic mission was born.<\/p>\n<p>His newly hatched project, &#8220;Delicatessen with Love,&#8221; ended up taking him to 58 countries, where he photographed grandmothers alongside their favorite ingredients and signature dishes.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_41219\" style=\"width: 370px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-41219\" class=\"size-full wp-image wp-image-41219 \" alt=\"gift_gab-grandmas_food2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/gift_gab-grandmas_food2.jpg\" width=\"360\" height=\"180\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-41219\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo courtesy of Gabriele Galimberti\/Riverboom\/INSTITUTE http:\/\/peace-meals.com\/the-grandmother-ingredient\/<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;I like the idea of showing all the single ingredients in the first photo in a way that everybody can recognize, and in the second photo, I show the result of the recipes, where all the ingredients are mixed together.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gabrielegalimberti.com\/projects\/delicatessen-with-love-2\/\">Delicatessen with Love website exhibition<\/a> also includes recipes for each dish (click on the &#8220;More Info&#8221; link below a photo to find the accompanying recipe).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And, yes,&#8221; Galimberti assures, &#8220;I always [sat] at the table with the grandmas, and I always tried their food!&#8221;\t\t<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Of all the warm, fuzzy feelings we get when we think of grandmothers, a full belly may be the most comforting of all.
