{"id":42679,"date":"2013-08-26T00:09:58","date_gmt":"2013-08-26T07:09:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/?p=42679"},"modified":"2013-08-26T00:09:58","modified_gmt":"2013-08-26T07:09:58","slug":"gmo-omg","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/42679","title":{"rendered":"GMO OMG"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\tLike O-M-G.<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s up with G-M-Os?<\/p>\n<p>(Genetically Modified Organisms, if ya didn&#8217;t know.)<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s focus on one thing today\u2014corn.<\/p>\n<p>Did you know that 85% (some studies show up to 99%) of non-organic corn\u00a0grown today in the U.S. is genetically modified? It&#8217;s a Monsanto product called &#8220;Bt Corn,&#8221; and its genes have been modified so an insecticide, called <em>Bacillus thuringiensis, <\/em>is produced by the plant.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s right, it <em>produces<\/em> its own pesticide, that when eaten by certain insects, <a href=\"http:\/\/articles.mercola.com\/sites\/articles\/archive\/2011\/10\/06\/dangerous-toxins-from-gmo-foods.aspx\">breaks open their stomachs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Bt-toxin, from soil bacteria, has been used as a natural pesticide for years. The difference?<\/p>\n<p>The GM version is built <em>inside<\/em> the plant\u2014the toxin doesn&#8217;t wash off, you can&#8217;t avoid eating it, and it&#8217;s thousands of times more concentrated than the spray. It even failed the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.responsibletechnology.org\/health-risks\">World Health Organization&#8217;s allergen screening tests<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This means, no matter how hard you scrub, you&#8217;re consuming high levels of this toxin. A recent study tested pregnant and non-pregnant Canadian females. It was accepted for publication in the journal <em>Reproductive Toxicology<\/em>, peer-reviewed, and proves the toxin isn&#8217;t breaking down in our gut like Monsanto claims,<a href=\"http:\/\/indiatoday.intoday.in\/story\/toxin-from-gm-crops-found-in-human-blood\/1\/137728.html\"> it&#8217;s showing up in\u00a0the blood<\/a> of those who eat it.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Doctors at Sherbrooke University Hospital in Quebec found the corn&#8217;s Bt-toxin in the blood of pregnant women and their babies, as well as in non-pregnant women. (Specifically, the toxin was identified in 93% of 30 pregnant women, 80% of umbilical blood in their babies, and 67% of 39 non-pregnant women.)&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/articles.mercola.com\/sites\/articles\/archive\/2011\/10\/06\/dangerous-toxins-from-gmo-foods.aspx\">Source: mercola.com<\/a>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Oh, and if you eat meat, remember that almost <em>all<\/em> cows and livestock in the U.S. are fed GMO corn (except my dairy cows, of course, who eat only local, non-GMO grass hay along with certified organic alfalfa pellets\u2014sadly even alfalfa can be GMO now). <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationofchange.org\/first-long-term-study-released-pigs-cattle-who-eat-gmo-soy-and-corn-offers-frightening-results-13723\">More on how this affects these animals, and subsequently, you<\/a>.
