{"id":45733,"date":"2013-11-21T00:09:31","date_gmt":"2013-11-21T08:09:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/?p=45733"},"modified":"2013-11-21T00:09:31","modified_gmt":"2013-11-21T08:09:31","slug":"artful-daughter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/45733","title":{"rendered":"Artful Daughter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\tWhat might happen if you were to hand a piece of fine art to a 4-year-old \u2026<\/p>\n<p>who is armed with markers?<\/p>\n<p>Magic, that&#8217;s what.<\/p>\n<p>Illustrator Mica Angela Hendricks confirmed this in a positively picturesque blog post earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>Eager to try out a special new sketchbook she&#8217;d ordered for herself, Mica attempted to sit down for a bit of &#8220;mommy time&#8221; drawing when her 4-year-old daughter snapped to attention.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;OOOH! Is that a NEW sketchbook?\u00a0Can I draw in that too, mama?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Reluctant to relinquish her project \u2026<\/p>\n<p>(&#8220;I&#8217;m all about kids\u2019 crafts, but when it comes to my own art projects, <em>I don\u2019t like to share<\/em><em>.&#8221;)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>She told her daughter that she had been planning to add a body to the woman&#8217;s face she&#8217;d just drawn.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Well, I will do it,&#8221; her daughter declared resolutely, and she grabbed the pen.<\/p>\n<p><i>One page<\/i>, Mica resigned \u2026 <i>I can sacrifice one page<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>She didn&#8217;t anticipate the absolute wonder of what came next.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I had drawn a woman&#8217;s face, and she had turned her into a dinosaur-woman.\u00a0It was beautiful, it was carefree, and I LOVED what she had created,&#8221; Mica admitted.\u00a0&#8220;Flipping through my sketchbook, I found another doodle of a face I had not yet finished. She drew a body on it, too, and I was enthralled. It was such a beautiful combination of my style and hers. And she loved being a part of it. She never hesitated in her intent.\u00a0She wasn&#8217;t tentative.\u00a0She was insistent and confident that she would, of course, improve any illustration I might have done.
