Size and solidity can vary from a plastic kit to something resembling a real house in a child&#8217;s size. Usually there is one room, a doorway with a window on either side, and little or no furniture other than that which the children improvise.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Something, oh, like this little dandy on the grounds of Mona Vale, a historic homestead in Christchurch, New Zealand:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_49230\" style=\"width: 370px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-49230\" class=\"wp-image  wp-image-49230\" src=\"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/749px-Mona_Vale_play_house.jpg\" alt=\"749px-Mona_Vale_play_house\" width=\"360\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-49230\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by Ann (Helen) Devereux via Wikimedia Commons<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Such a playhouse would suit any young Wendy &#8230; or Jane, as the case may be.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image aligncenter size-full wp-image-49238\" src=\"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/stella_9337.jpg\" alt=\"stella_9337\" width=\"360\" height=\"465\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The original &#8220;Wendy House&#8221; was, as you might have guessed, built for Wendy Darling in J. M. Barrie&#8217;s 1904 play, <i>Peter Pan<\/i>. When Wendy was shot by one of the Lost Boys, Peter and the boys built a small house around her body, attempting to construct the cottage that their beloved Wendy had once wished for:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I wish I had a darling house<br \/>\nThe littlest ever seen,<br \/>\nWith funny little red walls<br \/>\nAnd roof of mossy green.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_49233\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-49233\" class=\"wp-image size-full wp-image-49233\" src=\"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/LostBoysPeterWendy.jpg\" alt=\"LostBoysPeterWendy\" width=\"300\" height=\"452\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-49233\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Illustration of Wendy&#8217;s house by Alice B. Woodward via Wikipedia<\/p><\/div>\n<p>But, just as Peter Pan refused to grow up, even &#8220;big girls&#8221; hold fast to dreams of dwelling in a cottage like Wendy&#8217;s. How can we resist? The temptation is particularly irresistible in the face of houses such as these &#8230;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_49234\" style=\"width: 370px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-49234\" class=\"wp-image  wp-image-49234\" src=\"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/2422591_918dbf8a.jpg\" alt=\"2422591_918dbf8a\" width=\"360\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-49234\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by Len Williams via Geograph.org.uk<\/p><\/div>\n<p>That&#8217;s beguiling brick Marycot at Chartwell, constructed for Winston Churchill&#8217;s youngest daughter, Mary. Below is a whimsical Wendy House on the grounds of Eaton Hall in Cheshire, England.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-61335 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/3482908_9eba4dc72.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"458\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I think my favorite may be the marvelous Mawley Hall Wendy House in Shropshire, a wooden model of the estate&#8217;s summer house, built in the 1970s.
