{"id":49957,"date":"2014-06-19T00:09:31","date_gmt":"2014-06-19T07:09:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/?p=49957"},"modified":"2014-06-19T00:09:31","modified_gmt":"2014-06-19T07:09:31","slug":"tarantism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/49957","title":{"rendered":"tarantism"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\tWARNING!<\/p>\n<p>This post is not for those who are squeamish about &#8230;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_49976\" style=\"width: 370px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-49976\" class=\"wp-image-49976\" src=\"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/644px-Grammostola_rosea_adult_weiblich.jpg\" alt=\"644px-Grammostola_rosea_adult_weiblich\" width=\"360\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-49976\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by Viki via Wikimedia Commons<\/p><\/div>\n<p>See what I mean?<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re still with me, then you&#8217;re a trooper, but you&#8217;re probably also wondering why I decided to kick off today with a photo of a tarantula.<\/p>\n<p>Let me give you an obnoxiously obscure hint:<\/p>\n<p>What do tarantulas have in common with the picture below?<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_49978\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-49978\" class=\"wp-image-49978\" src=\"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Linen.jpg\" alt=\"Linen\" width=\"300\" height=\"450\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-49978\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by FlyGirl555 via Wikimedia Commons<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Tarantulas \u2026 dancing \u2026 do you dare to hazard a guess?<\/p>\n<p>The answer is a word of which I&#8217;d never heard:<\/p>\n<p>Tarantism (TAR-uhn-tiz-uhm).<\/p>\n<p>It refers, says Dictionary.com, to &#8220;a mania characterized by an uncontrollable impulse to dance, especially as prevalent in southern Italy from the 15th to the 17th century, popularly attributed to the bite of the tarantula.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Okay, but &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>This definition left me even more puzzled than before.<\/p>\n<p>Upon further investigation, I found that the terms &#8220;tarantism&#8221; and &#8220;tarantula&#8221; both originated in the city of Taranto, Italy, a picturesque but <a href=\"http:\/\/jerrygarrett.wordpress.com\/2012\/06\/12\/taranto-italys-worst-tourist-destination\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span lang=\"\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">purportedly polluted<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span lang=\"\"> seaport where the bites of these spiders were once believed to cause wild spasms of frantic footloosery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Why not?<\/p>\n<p>Now you have an excuse the next time the desire to dance overcomes you.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<i>Tarantismo<\/i>,&#8221; you can sigh in your best Italian accent. &#8220;Blame the spider!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;\t\t<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WARNING!
