My heart brimmed with whimsy as I whisked off my quilt to begin the day!<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_50899\" style=\"width: 370px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-50899\" class=\"wp-image-50899 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/Good-morning1.jpg\" alt=\"Good-morning1\" width=\"360\" height=\"238\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-50899\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image courtesy of Bumble Button<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Okay, clever girl, did you catch the literary device I employed in the sentence above?<\/p>\n<p>It was neither <a href=\"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/46610\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span lang=\"\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">alliteration<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span lang=\"\"> nor <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/21864\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span lang=\"\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">hyperbole<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span lang=\"\">,<\/span><\/p>\n<p>not metaphor or simile \u2026<\/p>\n<p>So, what could it be?<\/p>\n<p>The repeating short &#8220;i&#8221; sound I used to describe my morning is an example of assonance, a rather tricky technique involving the repetition of words that share vowel sounds but have different beginning and end consonants.<\/p>\n<p>Told you it was tricky. And I&#8217;m not even sure I have it right.<\/p>\n<p>It can be tough to pin down instances of assonance (it probably slips right past most of us), but ambitious writers have been known to rely on this device to set the mood of their text. Long vowel sounds tend to s-l-o-w the energy of a passage, making the tone more somber, while short vowel sounds\u00a0lend a literary lift.<\/p>\n<p>Assonance has been used by all sorts of famous wordsmiths &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Frost:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He gives his harness bells a shake<\/p>\n<p>To ask if there is some mistake.<\/p>\n<p>The only other sound\u2019s the sweep<\/p>\n<p>Of easy wind and downy flake.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Poe:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Eagerly I wished the morrow; vainly I had sought to borrow<\/p>\n<p>From my books surcease of sorrow\u2014sorrow for the lost Lenore.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Sandburg:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Poetry is old, ancient, goes back far. It is among the oldest of living things.
