{"id":52607,"date":"2014-10-18T00:09:18","date_gmt":"2014-10-18T07:09:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/?p=52607"},"modified":"2014-10-18T00:09:18","modified_gmt":"2014-10-18T07:09:18","slug":"a-tiny-town-with-a-big-harvest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/52607","title":{"rendered":"a tiny town with a big harvest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\tWhat do you think the village of Morton, Illinois, might be famous for?<\/p>\n<p>Yes, this town of some 16,000 residents, a bedroom community of Peoria, was ranked one of the &#8220;10 best towns for families&#8221; in 2013 by<em> Family Circle<\/em> magazine.<\/p>\n<p>And yes, it gained some <em>in<\/em>famy that same year when one of its neighborhoods blocked a Habitat for Humanity home from being built for a hearing-disabled veteran because they didn\u2019t think the vinyl-sided home would fit into their brick-house community (after donations poured in as a result of the story, a brick house was built in its stead).<\/p>\n<p>Is Morton, Illinois,\u00a0the home of Morton Salt?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-52611 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/1965a-1.jpg\" alt=\"1965a-1\" width=\"340\" height=\"477\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Morton University? No, those are both natives of Chicago, about 150 miles to the northeast.<\/p>\n<p>Think fall \u2026 think round \u2026 think orange!<\/p>\n<p>Morton is known as the Pumpkin Capital of the World.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_52612\" style=\"width: 369px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-52612\" class=\"wp-image-52612\" src=\"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/1280px-Traugers-farm-bucks-county-large.jpg\" alt=\"1280px-Traugers-farm-bucks-county-large\" width=\"359\" height=\"255\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-52612\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by Frenchtowner via Wikimedia Commons<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Not only are several thousand acres around Morton growing pumpkins, but the Libby pumpkin cannery calls Morton home, canning up to 85 percent of the canned pumpkin in the U.S. So much pumpkin that the cannery runs day and night for about 13 weeks each year leading up to Thanksgiving. About 200 local farmers grow millions of pumpkins \u2026 not the kind you\u2019d especially use for carving, but Dickinsons\u2014tan-colored, oblong, thin-skinned pumpkins known for their rich flavor.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_52608\" style=\"width: 370px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-52608\" class=\"wp-image-52608\" src=\"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Dickenson-Pumpkin.jpg\" alt=\"Dickenson-Pumpkin\" width=\"360\" height=\"270\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-52608\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dickenson pumpkins, Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds<\/p><\/div>\n<p>And each September at the beginning of pumpkin-harvest season, Morton holds their annual Pumpkin Festival, a 4-day event that attracts 100,000 visitors to the tiny town for events like Pumpkin Bingo, a pumpkin-decorating contest, a parade with over 100 entries where participants and spectators alike are encouraged to wear orange, and as many pumpkin-laden treats that residents can dream up \u2026 and visitors can eat up.
