Wild aurochs were large, lean cattle who roamed the plains of\u00a0Europe, Asia, and Africa by the millions. Auroch remains have been\u00a0found that are thought to be\u00a02 million years old.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_52728\" style=\"width: 370px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-52728\" class=\"wp-image-52728\" src=\"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Lascaux_painting.jpg\" alt=\"Lascaux_painting\" width=\"360\" height=\"236\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-52728\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by Prof saxx via Wikimedia Commons<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Aurochs were still plentiful in the time of the Roman Empire, but aggressive hunting resulted in near extinction by the 13th century, when only nobles, and later royals, were allowed to hunt them, and poaching was punishable by death. The last known cow died in 1627 in Poland.<\/p>\n<p>Efforts are now underway to &#8220;breed back&#8221; the species using modern DNA technology.
