{"id":53648,"date":"2015-01-06T00:09:51","date_gmt":"2015-01-06T08:09:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/?p=53648"},"modified":"2015-01-06T00:09:51","modified_gmt":"2015-01-06T08:09:51","slug":"its-its-purpose","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/53648","title":{"rendered":"It&#8217;s its purpose &#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\tWhen it comes to apostrophes, &#8220;it&#8221; is probably the most misused, misunderstood, but ironically, simple usage in the English language.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/its.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image aligncenter size-full wp-image-53652\" src=\"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/its.jpg\" alt=\"its\" width=\"360\" height=\"610\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In a nutshell &#8230; only use an apostrophe with &#8220;it&#8221; when it&#8217;s\u00a0contracting &#8220;it is&#8221; to one word, &#8220;it&#8217;s&#8221; &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>see, it&#8217;s simple (it IS simple)! Its usage (no apostrophe) is only confusing when you remember that the apostrophe, in other instances, is a way to signify possession: &#8220;She&#8217;s very good at punctuation.&#8221; Or &#8220;He&#8217;s a good speller.&#8221; But, when you&#8217;re talking &#8220;it,&#8221; the apostrophe never shows possession: &#8220;I love my new truck. Its truck bed is just the size I need.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>So, when in doubt, just see if you would use &#8220;is&#8221; in your sentence (following\u00a0&#8220;it&#8221;)\u00a0if you&#8217;re trying to use it&#8217;s or its. If you can use an &#8220;is,&#8221; then use an apostrophe. If not, you can&#8217;t.
