Formally known as lithops (a genus that contains several species), they are succulent plants commonly called &#8220;living stones&#8221; or &#8220;pebble plants.&#8221; You can see why.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_53972\" style=\"width: 369px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-53972\" class=\"wp-image-53972\" src=\"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/800px-Lithops_dividing.jpg\" alt=\"800px-Lithops_dividing\" width=\"359\" height=\"239\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-53972\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by Anselm Bradford via Wikimedia Commons<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;Lithops are true mimicry plants: their shape, size, and color causes them to resemble small stones in their natural surroundings. The plants blend in among the stones as a means of protection. Grazing animals, which would otherwise eat them during periods of drought to obtain moisture, usually overlook them. Even experts in the field sometimes have difficulty locating plants for study because of this unusual deceptive camouflage,&#8221; explains enthusiast <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lithops.info\/en\/index.html\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span lang=\"\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Nick Rowlette<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span lang=\"\">. &#8220;In the wild, lithops inhabit vast dry regions of southern Africa.
