{"id":556,"date":"2011-08-09T13:33:56","date_gmt":"2011-08-09T20:33:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/?p=556"},"modified":"2011-08-09T13:33:56","modified_gmt":"2011-08-09T20:33:56","slug":"gone-fishin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/556","title":{"rendered":"Gone Fishin&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\tYou\u2019ve seen \u2018em\u2014the \u201cgone fishin\u2019\u201d bumper stickers:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #999999;\">&gt;&lt;x&gt;<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0 hooked for life;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #999999;\">&gt;&lt;x&gt;<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0 good things come to those who bait;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #999999;\">&gt;&lt;x&gt;<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0 salmon\u2014the other pink meat;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #999999;\">&gt;&lt;x&gt;<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0 hook \u2018em and cook \u2018em;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #999999;\">&gt;&lt;x&gt;<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0 be back dark thirty;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #999999;\">&gt;&lt;x&gt;<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0 my other wife is the fishin\u2019 life. (I made this last one up myself.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Wherever fish are bountiful and bitin\u2019, bumper-sticker philosophers keep themselves busy reeling us in.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><!--more-->Last weekend, Reverend Ogle hit the high seas, alone but not lonely. Leaving work early on Friday headed for <a href=\"http:\/\/parksandrecreation.idaho.gov\/parks\/dworshak.aspx\">Dworshak reservoir<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what he came home with late Sunday.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-557\" title=\"get_out-nicks_fish-4756\" src=\"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/get_out-nicks_fish-4756.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"240\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Kokanee\u2014not the beer named after them, but the reel deal\u2014bite-size salmon.<\/p>\n<p>As is his religion, he stuffed them whole into jars (well, he removed their heads first), and put the jars into a pressure cooker. (As was also my father\u2019s custom, fish heads are always planted right next to any available rose bush. You\u2019ve heard of fish fertilizer, right? Now you know our secret for prize-winning roses.)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-558\" title=\"get_out-pressure_cooker-6429\" src=\"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/get_out-pressure_cooker-6429.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"312\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The result?<\/p>\n<p>Canned salmon.<\/p>\n<p>But not just ANY canned salmon. Divine canned salmon. Food-of-the-gods canned salmon. If we could swing it, I\u2019d be up for husby abandoning us every weekend. If I could choose one nutrient-dense, calcium-rich, omega-oil packed food, it would be hand-caught, home-canned, Idaho salmon.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-559\" title=\"get_out-canned_fish-DJS-5629\" src=\"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/get_out-canned_fish-DJS-5629.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"257\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Okay, I have enough fishing stories to journal us into oblivion. Don\u2019t get me started. But do tell me yours. I\u2019m easily hooked. Any bumper sticker aficionados out there?<\/p>\n<p>How about the time I was \u201ccaught\u201d catching fish with my bare hands by a Fish &amp; Game officer, who not only confiscated my cache (and grilled them for his dinner while I warmed up my empty, cold, numb hands), but slapped me with a fine. Did you know stream\/lake fish have to willingly get caught, as in \u201cdecide\u201d to bite a hook? I didn\u2019t. I do now. So much for slow, patient hands that react at break neck speed to tickle the tummies of fish just before hooking a thumb up with a gill.
