{"id":57845,"date":"2015-10-05T00:09:51","date_gmt":"2015-10-05T07:09:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/?p=57845"},"modified":"2015-10-05T00:09:51","modified_gmt":"2015-10-05T07:09:51","slug":"old-fashioned-mad-lib","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/57845","title":{"rendered":"old-fashioned mad lib"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\tGo ahead, ask my granddaughters \u2026<\/p>\n<p>I am positively mad for the madcap fun of Mad Libs.<\/p>\n<p>(Did you see that I even took a stab at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/52834\"><u>my own version, dubbed the &#8220;ag lib&#8221;<\/u><\/a>?)<\/p>\n<p>Yup.<\/p>\n<p>So, imagine my delight when I learned that gals like me were goofing around with &#8220;libs&#8221; long before the template took on a trademark. Leave it to Susan Odom to discover such a treasure.<\/p>\n<p>Who&#8217;s Susan, you ask?<\/p>\n<p>She is the brilliant proprietress of <a href=\"http:\/\/hillsidehomestead.com\/\"><u>Hillside Homestead<\/u><\/a>, a historic Michigan farmstay that you&#8217;ll get to visit in the\u00a0Oct\/Nov issue of my magazine, on newsstands now\u00a0(this is one you won&#8217;t want to miss \u2026 but aren&#8217;t they all?). When Susan isn&#8217;t entertaining guests with authentic turn-of-the-twentieth-century meals and activities around her pastoral property, she blogs a bit. And in one of her posts last summer, she wrote, &#8220;Well, here we sit on the longest day of the year as we prepare for our big Farmhouse Frolic tomorrow! We are all so excited\u2014we will be waxing eggs; bubble bowling; making rhubarb sauce; playing games; watching pigs, ducks, and chickens; and so much more. One thing we could not quite fit into the schedule was a &#8216;mad lib&#8217; found in a wonderful book called <em>The American Girls Handy Book<\/em>, which was published in 1887 (read more about that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/57842\">here<\/a>). It&#8217;s called &#8216;Biographical Nonsense&#8217; \u2026 Who know that there were historic mad libs?
