And why not? Our region grows 25% of the nation\u2019s lentil supply, and we are world-renowned for producing the highest quality lentils in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>Since 1989, revelers have visited Pullman, Washington\u00a0(our little sister city right across the border), from all across the country to celebrate this tiny legume during the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lentilfest.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lentil Festival<\/a>. The chosen weekend in August always coincides with the beginning of a new school year for both of our universities (The University of Idaho here in Moscow\u00a0and Washington State University in Pullman)\u00a0as well as our local schools, so you\u2019re bound to run into someone you know while you sample some lentil chili from a 600-gallon pot.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_58063\" style=\"width: 370px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-58063\" class=\"wp-image-58063\" src=\"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/lentil-fest1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"239\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-58063\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">lentil chili pot via lentilfest.com<\/p><\/div>\n<p>That\u2019s right, they stir it with a boat paddle!<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re the athletic sort, you can run in the 5K race, play a game of 3-on-3 basketball, glide through a skateboard competition, or join in the mini golf tournament.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_58064\" style=\"width: 370px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-58064\" class=\"wp-image-58064\" src=\"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/lentilfest2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"239\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-58064\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">lentil festival runners via lentilfest.com<\/p><\/div>\n<p>And don\u2019t forget the parade! The little cuties below are this year\u2019s \u2018Lil Lentil King and Queen.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_58065\" style=\"width: 370px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-58065\" class=\"wp-image-58065\" src=\"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/lentilfest3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"240\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-58065\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">lentil festival parade via lentilfest.com<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Local artisans display their wares, a stage hosts great live music, and a beer and wine garden features local microbrews and wines.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, it\u2019s not all about parties and parades. This year, local sponsors partnered with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.feedingchildreneverywhere.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Feeding Children Everywhere<\/a>, and thanks to their support and the work of many volunteers, 25,000 healthy meals featuring lentils were hand-packed for local distribution. And our local humane shelter raised $30,000 for the animals.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re out this way next year, you should definitely drop in.
