{"id":59616,"date":"2016-01-05T00:09:35","date_gmt":"2016-01-05T08:09:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/?p=59616"},"modified":"2016-01-05T00:09:35","modified_gmt":"2016-01-05T08:09:35","slug":"duodji","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/59616","title":{"rendered":"Duodji"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\tDoy-gee!<\/p>\n<p>While this may sound like some sort of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/59619\">neologism <\/a>meant to convey, say, surprise or delight, it is actually the pronunciation of:<\/p>\n<p>Duodji.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, gee \u2026<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t worry if you&#8217;re coming up empty on definitions because <em>duodji<\/em> isn&#8217;t an English word\u2013not even close. It actually hails from a remote group of nomadic people called the S\u00e1mi who herd reindeer across the far northern reaches of Scandinavia.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_59621\" style=\"width: 370px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-59621\" class=\"wp-image-59621\" src=\"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/447px-Sami_family-easter.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"482\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-59621\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo of Sami family at spring (Easter) celebration by Mortsan via Wikimedia Commons<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Duodji refers to any number of handcrafted items made by the S\u00e1mi that are both aesthetically beautiful and useful (clothing, accessories, household items, and tools). Traditionally, duodji crafts were divided into men&#8217;s and women&#8217;s work.
