{"id":61676,"date":"2016-07-28T00:09:19","date_gmt":"2016-07-28T07:09:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/?p=61676"},"modified":"2016-07-28T00:09:19","modified_gmt":"2016-07-28T07:09:19","slug":"one-word-wonders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/61676","title":{"rendered":"one-word wonders"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\tHow does this photo make you feel?<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_61677\" style=\"width: 370px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-61677\" class=\"wp-image-61677\" src=\"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/human-767256_960_720.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"540\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-61677\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by Pezibear via Pixabay<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Would you say it gives you a sense of <em>ukiyo<\/em>?<\/p>\n<p>Whoa \u2026 what was that?<\/p>\n<p>You know, <em>ukiyo<\/em>: living in the moment, detached from the bothers of life?<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the vibe in a nutshell, right?<\/p>\n<p>Thank Japan for summing up something like \u201ccontentment mixed with whimsical nostalgia and feelings of freedom\u201d into one perfect gem.<\/p>\n<p>You probably see these sorts of one-word wonders on Pinterest all the time\u2014obscure terms from other languages that describe feelings we Americans simply haven\u2019t invented words to convey.<\/p>\n<p>Pinning these pretties is easy as pie, but can you actually incorporate them into daily use?<\/p>\n<p>Nope, me neither. But wouldn\u2019t you like to?<\/p>\n<p>How lovely would it be to describe our feelings with such concision?<\/p>\n<p>Rambling not required.<\/p>\n<p>Inspired, I set out to broaden our linguistic horizons a bit, to deepen our pool of descriptive vocabulary. I pulled together a little 5-word dictionary (complete with pronunciations) of words that eloquently evoke emotion.<\/p>\n<p>Your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to try to use one of these words in casual conversation each day for a week. And, of course, leave a comment to tell me how you managed to squeeze \u2018em in.<\/p>\n<p>Ready, set \u2026<\/p>\n<p>Go!<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Laotong<\/strong> (lao-dong), from China:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>A friendship that bonds two girls together for eternity as kindred sisters.<\/p>\n<p>As in: \u201cSally and I agreed that our serendipitous meeting on MaryJane\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.maryjanesfarm.org\/snitz\/\"><u>Farmgirl Connection<\/u><\/a> was the beginning of our <em>laotong<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong>Gigil<\/strong> (GEE-gil), from the Philippines:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The overwhelming urge to pinch or squeeze something cute.<\/p>\n<p>As in: \u201cI was overcome with <em>gigil<\/em> at the site of the baby\u2019s smiling cheeks.\u201d<\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><strong>Mudita<\/strong> (moo-DEE-tah), from India:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Sympathetic or unselfish joy; delight in the good fortune of others.<\/p>\n<p>As in: \u201cWe all shared a deep feeling of <em>mudita<\/em> when Mom announced that she\u2019d won a trip to a yoga retreat in India because she has always wanted to go there.\u201d<\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><strong>Voorpret<\/strong> (foor-bdet), from the Netherlands:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The sense of joyous anticipation felt before an event actually takes place.<\/p>\n<p>As in: \u201cAs Daisy Jo prepared for the midsummer garden party, she could barely contain her <em>voorpret<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li><strong>Meraki<\/strong> (MER-a-kee), from Greece:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Soul, creativity, or love put into a project; the essence of yourself that is put into your work.<\/p>\n<p>As in: \u201cShe loves to make jewelry with sea glass, and she crafts each piece with profound <em>meraki<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;\t\t<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How does this photo make you feel?
