Wondering who I am? I\u2019m Merit Badge Awardee Jane (MBA Jane for short). In my<\/span> former life<\/span><\/span><\/a> \u2026\u00a0<\/b>\u00a0<\/b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

For this week\u2019s Stitching and Crafting\/Weaving In and Out Intermediate Level Young Cultivator Merit Badge<\/u><\/a>, Piper, Andy, and I stepped up the ante. Now that we were pretty proficient at how to braid and make our own friendship bracelets,<\/p>\n

we had to branch out and …<\/p>\n

make another using a different material this time and give one away.<\/p>\n

Seemed simple enough. Aww, naivet\u00e9, thy name is Jane \u2026<\/p>\n

We already had enough friendship bracelets to adorn most of the neighborhood (and in Andy\u2019s case, the local football team), but we were fresh outta yarn. We pondered and pondered: what else could be braided?<\/p>\n

Well, that was a loaded question for Lil’ Miss Pipes.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat can\u2019t <\/em>be braided?\u201d she rephrased, in delight.<\/p>\n

Umm, turns out that became a list.<\/p>\n

Things That Cannot Be Braided:<\/strong>
\n\u2022 Rocks
\n\u2022 Granola bars
\n\u2022 Chicken feathers
\n\u2022 Beef jerky
\n\u2022 Sticks of gum
\n\u2022 All the electrical cords behind the entertainment cabinet (but only cuz Dad says no)
\n\u2022 Toothbrushes
\n\u2022 Dog\u2019s ears (but only because they won\u2019t sit still long enough)
\n\u2022 Kitten\u2019s tails (see above)
\n\u2022 Forks
\n\u2022 Spoons
\n\u2022 Knives<\/p>\n

And how do we know these items aren\u2019t braidable, you might ask? Because we didn’t<\/em> attempt them, naturally \u2026 sigh.<\/p>\n

The next list seemed more fun (not to mention, more applicable).<\/p>\n

Things That CAN Be Braided:<\/strong>
\n\u2022 Yarn
\n\u2022 Ribbons
\n\u2022 Shoelaces (not while people are wearing them, though. Not nice, Andy)
\n\u2022 Some flower stalks or long grasses
\n\u2022 Strips of cloth or lace
\n\u2022 Rickrack
\n\u2022 Your mom\u2019s purse straps
\n\u2022 Your dad\u2019s belts
\n\u2022 Curly ribbon on packages\/gifts
\n\u2022 Headbands and hair ties
\n\u2022 Curtain tie-backs
\n\u2022 Fringe
\n\u2022 Shirt sleeves (Don\u2019t ask. I think they were making homemade strait jackets or something.)
\n\u2022 Fruit leather (sticky, but worth the flavor combination)
\n\u2022 Licorice sticks
\n\u2022 Dental floss
\n\u2022 Bungee cords
\n\u2022 Bread dough
\n\u2022 Embroidery floss
\n\u2022 Men\u2019s dress socks or girl\u2019s knee-highs<\/p>\n

I think the list would have gone on all day and night, but we needed to get crackin\u2019 on actually accomplishing a few completed bracelets and then gifting them. This likely would have led to another list, but I snagged the pencil from Piper. Sheesh, if there\u2019s a badge for List Making that kiddo would be Chapter Leader in no time.<\/p>\n

There are approximately 7.4 billion people in the world right now.<\/p>\n

We have nearly enough friendship bracelets for everyone.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m. Not. Even. Kidding.<\/p>\n

Piper and Andy picked out the very best, the most beautiful, the one that took the most work and time, the one they treasured out of them all, and they gave it to \u2026<\/p>\n

Me.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t be jelly of my fruit leather, hollyhock stalk, dental floss, and ribbon bracelet, my farmgirls. It is one of a kind, yes, but you too can have a priceless symbol of your neighbor kids’ affection. Just teach them this badge!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
