Take it away, MBA Jane!!! ~MaryJane\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #339966;\">Wondering who I am? I\u2019m Merit Badge Awardee Jane (MBA Jane for short). In my<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/10477\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">former life<\/span><\/span><\/a> \u2026<b>\u00a0<\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>For this week\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.farmgirlsisterhood.org\/badges-eo-herstory.asp\"><u>Each Other\/Her-Story Beginner Level Merit Badge<\/u><\/a>, I found myself stumped for a moment. Find an influential and\/or powerful woman who is still alive to research.<\/p>\n<p>Hmm. Seemed simple enough, but surprisingly difficult, to boot. Also, I got a little sad when random women jumped into my head, then when I Googled them, found that they had passed to their eternal reward. I ate some cookies. I thought some more. I drummed my fingers restlessly on my coffee table, where my latest stack of library books sat ready and waiting. I looked down.<\/p>\n<p>Then, I had it!<\/p>\n<p>Harry Potter\u2019s cute, little, bespectacled face peered up at me endearingly.<\/p>\n<p>J.K. Rowling!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_61741\" style=\"width: 370px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-61741\" class=\"wp-image-61741\" src=\"http:\/\/www.raisingjane.org\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/J__K__Rowling_2010.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"444\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-61741\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">photo by Daniel Ogren via Wikimedia Commons<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Talk about influential and powerful. I mean, she singlehandedly got millions of school-aged youngsters to love books again. <em>That\u2019s influential. <\/em>She changed the game for middle school novels. <em>That\u2019s powerful. <\/em>And even more than that, I learned she\u2019s pretty darn inspirational too.<\/p>\n<p>Some facts about J.K. you might find as super-neato as I did:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>J.K. (or Joanne as I like to call her, since I pretty much assume we\u2019re friends by now) wrote the first <em>Harry Potter<\/em> while she was a single mom on welfare, and it was rejected 12 times before being picked up by a publishing house for a mere $4,000.<\/li>\n<li>The fourth book in the series, <em>Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire<\/em>, became the fastest-selling book in history. Like, history of the world, peeps.<\/li>\n<li>Rowling is now the 13th wealthiest woman in Britain (wealthier even than the queen!)<\/li>\n<li>Her book, <em>The Tales of Beedle the Bard<\/em>, puts every cent in royalties earned towards charity.<\/li>\n<li>The films based on her books are the second-highest-grossing films in history.<\/li>\n<li>She went from living on state benefits to multi-millionaire status in a mere five years.<\/li>\n<li><em>Forbes<\/em>\u00a0ranked Rowling as the 48th most powerful celebrity of 2007,\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Time<\/em> magazine named her as a runner-up for its 2007\u00a0Person of the Year, noting the social, moral, and\u00a0political inspiration she has given\u00a0her fans. In October 2010, Rowling was named the &#8220;Most Influential Woman in Britain&#8221; by leading magazine editors.<\/li>\n<li>She based the character of Hermione Granger on herself when she was 11.<\/li>\n<li>In 1982, she took the entrance exams for Oxford, but was not accepted. She ended up going to University of Exeter, where she recalls doing very little work, and mostly read a lot of Dickens and Tolkien.<\/li>\n<li>In 2012 <em>Forbes<\/em> had to remove Rowling from their list of billionaires because she had given so much money away to charities, she lost her billionaire status. Wowza!<\/li>\n<li>Rowling has named communist and\u00a0civil rights\u00a0activist\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jessica_Mitford\"><u>Jessica Mitford<\/u><\/a>\u00a0as her &#8220;most influential writer,&#8221; saying, &#8220;Jessica Mitford has been my heroine since I was 14 years old, when I overheard my formidable great-aunt discussing how Mitford had run away at the age of 19 to fight with the Reds in the\u00a0Spanish Civil War\u201d, and claims what inspired her about Mitford was that she was &#8220;incurably and instinctively rebellious, brave, adventurous, funny and irreverent, she liked nothing better than a good fight, preferably against a pompous and hypocritical target.&#8221; Sounds like a few s\/heroes I know!<\/li>\n<li>Rowling has described\u00a0Jane Austen\u00a0as her favorite author,\u00a0calling\u00a0<em>Emma<\/em> her favorite book.\u00a0As a child, Rowling has said her early influences included\u00a0<em>The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe<\/em>\u00a0by\u00a0C.S.
