Jane Addams (1860 –1935)
The first American woman to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, founded Hull House in Chicago, a “settlement house” which offered social services to urban poor, including kindergarten classes, clubs, a public kitchen, an art gallery, a coffeehouse, a gymnasium, a girls club, a swimming pool, a book bindery, a music school, a drama group, a library, and an adult night school.

Addams helped organize the Women’s Peace Party and the International Congress of Women in an effort to avert the first World War.
