Mnemonic

Here’s a word that caught my eye—and my memory. Below is a snippet of an article in the upcoming “Smitten” April/May 2012 issue of my magazine.

“It’s the same creativity she puts into caring for her family and writing a blog called …

… My Very Educated Mother (www.myveryeducatedmother.blogspot.com). It isn’t a comment on her education, but the beginning of a favorite childhood mnemonic for the planets in the solar system. (My [Mercury] Very [Venus] Educated [Earth] Mother [Mars] Just [Jupiter] Served [Saturn] Us [Uranus] Nine [Neptune] Pizzas [Pluto, which was still a planet back then])”

Say it with me: Mnemonic\ni-mä-nik\ adjective, noun assisting or intended to assist memory.

How good is your brain in its mnemonic endeavors? Carol uses a mnemonic to remember the tuning on her little ukulele: Good Cats Eat Ants (G, C, E, A).

Try this online memory game out and tell me your time!

  1. I think that’s really cool. I’ll have to give it a try myself and see if it helps me remember stuff 🙂 🙂 Have a great weekend. Love and hugs from the ocean shores of California, Heather 🙂

My mom taught us to use mnemonic devices to remember things at a very young age. It got me through school, piano lessons, etc., etc.
I still come up with CRAZY phrases to commit things to memory. This is a great word and a great tool.
