Happiness …

We all know happiness can’t be bought or sold. And we know we can’t expect anyone to create happiness for us, right? So if you can’t buy something to make you happy and you’re supposed to make yourself happy, how is that done exactly?

I love to swing & go down slides…pure happiness. I love to walk through the fallen leaves in fall & hear them swish…pure happiness. I love to walk through mud puddles…pure happiness.

  2. Winnie Nielsen says:

Happiness seems so challenged by the demands of working. Having to be doing the business agenda all day robs me of energy and awareness of those tiny things still possible to do that increase happiness. Why IS that so hard to do???

  3. I totally agree with the part about being happy like a child for no reason. It is so freeing and delightful, simplistic and fun. Great read. Thanks.

  4. Amy Axworthy says:

We have talked often this summer about hanging a tire swing for our grandchildren. After reading about the joy of reaching out for the sky on a swing, I think that is going to happen this weekend! I always loved the swings on my grandfathers farm in southwestern PA. My brothers and I would race to the orchard when we arrived at the farm to be first on the swings. Such a simple, joyful time. And another wonderful memory was the big, wide porch swing, covered with puffy cushions that my mothers friend Betty had on her front porch. I think we need one of those as well. Thank you for reminding me of those wonderful moments in my life.

  5. Megan says:

The sounds of fall make me oh so happy too! And Amy, I love your image of the porch swing! I hope you had a weekend filled with happiness and swinging on your tire swing!

The Speed of Love

Louise, our farm-gal photographer and her best friend Nicole, took a trip to see Lou’s fiance close to a year ago. During the long road trip, Lou swerved to miss something in the middle of the road. As she sped by, she saw …

Such a sweet ending!!! Love those kitty faces!!

  4. Shery says:

Awww, I’ll never understand how anyone with a heart beating within their chest could do such a cruel thing. Sooo glad that the girls got to the kittens before anyone else. Happy ending … and a new beginning for the cats! Yay! <3

The Teachers of the World

Our little Stella started school this fall. It has been life changing. I cannot believe how much she’s learned in just one short month. And, most important, how much she loves it. She picks out her little outfits each morning, requests different types of braids most days, and then off she goes. When she gets home, she is so eager to do her homework that we work on it right away. We’ve set up a chalkboard in the living room so she can pretend she is the teacher. She has an entire class of well-behaved stuffed animals and dolls.

Galvanizing a Nation (or Resurrecting a 2010 Essay)

I wouldn’t say I cry easily. Sure, I cry at movies and I cry sometimes when I read the news. And I can cry when I feel inexplicable happiness. (I love it when THAT happens.) Or sadness. But often, when others around me are crying, I’m dry-eyed. Maybe going public will help diminish the one trigger that turns me into a complete, blubbering cry-baby—embarrassingly so. In fact, I usually show up for my “cry” in a big, floppy hat wearing sunglasses.

Thank you for reminding me how great it is to vote.In all the years since I have been old enough to vote,I have missed one election–I had the flu & couldn’t go to vote. I, too, feel that it is such a privilege to vote. I wouldn’t miss it for the world!

  2. Winnie Nielsen says:

In keeping with my comment under the first photo, I would add that all of us need to vote because it is a right that imprisonment and even death has happened in the effort to have equal civil rights! When we don’t vote, we let other agendas prevail and we only have ourselves to thank when we don’t like the way things go.

  3. Lizz says:

Wow, MaryJane, that was an amazing post. Bravo.

hanging on to summer

Our crew at the farm and their families joined us for one last backyard BBQ before it’s too cold to sit outside in the evening.

We munched on the usual organic hamburgers, brats, and dawgs. The salads were …

Day of Peace

International Day of Peace (United Nations) is on Friday, September 21, 2012 … a rather touchy subject these days given current events and political campaigns. It’s clearly an important holiday to celebrate, but all things considered, I’m …

OK that does it; now I need to plant Zinnia seeds next year as your hummingbirds seem enraptured with your flowers:-) And it is one seed I’ve yet to try but heard they are quite easy to grow?
