Gardenin’ on the Wild Side

Did you know that May is Garden for Wildlife Month?

It is.

So.

Now that you know THAT …

How you gonna celebrate?

You know it don’t matter none if you have a sprawlin’ farm or a teensy tiny apartment balcony, you can grow a garden of beautiful blooms for the birds and the bees, butterflies, and other wild neighbors.

Why fill a hummingbird feeder when you can offer flowers instead?

And, if you live in an urban setting, your garden will help restore a little oasis of nature where  mostly concrete prevails. Just ask this cozy mourning dove …

The National Wildlife Federation offers the following tips for tailoring your garden to wildlife (click on a tip to learn how):

  1. Provide Food for Wildlife
  2. Supply Water
  3. Create Cover
  4. Give Wildlife a Place to Raise Young

Once you’ve established these four essential elements to make a healthy and sustainable wildlife habitat, the NWF encourages you to join thousands of gardeners across the country who have qualified for the Certified Wildlife Habitat program.

Now THAT’S somethin’ to celebrate!

my bandit b-day

For my 60th b-day, my daughter, Megan, and I traveled with Ace to Kansas to join up with a Farmgirls on the Loose event. I’m still sorting through all the photos we took and promise to share every detail of our fabulous time very soon.

meet baby Yore

Another new baby Jersey was born yesterday to Mama Emma. I named him Yore, not because he’s harmless and sweet like Eeyore (who is surprisingly good at Pooh-sticks), and not because Yore means
yesteryear, time past, and especially long past as in Heritage Jersey, the breed I’m big on because they’re so small. I named him Yore because when I rolled him/her over to find out we’d just had our third GUY in a row (we want girls—they give milk), I said …

If these clothespins could talk …

What a find. Hard to imagine the situation in which a woman carved clothespins from select tree branches and then wrapped some scrap metal around the ends so they wouldn’t split entirely. Then, THEN, she hollowed out a larger branch and covered one end in a piece of leather to hold her FOUR clothespins. Precious indeed. How I wish I knew the history of these pins.

Ah, it’s the little things in life …

The obvious, the humble,

The all-too-often overlooked.
