V-day Gifts

I’m curious. How did your significant other show-you-the-love on V-day? Me? I got not one (apparently he didn’t give me gooder grammar), but three, THREE baby dripping-with-sweetness, organic watermelons. (An out-of-season delicacy that had me swooning and spoonin’ in no time.)

And, AND … organic kale for my chickens. I kid you not. I’ve picked my greenhouse kale down to its very nubbins and was saying how sorry I felt for my chickens this time of year. “Poor things, I’m out of greens.” So what did hubby really give me in its most finest final form? Dark yellow yolks again, that’s what. (You know that’s what gives your homegrown eggs their vibrant color, right? Chlorophyll.)

he’s crackin’ nuts

After we gathered the walnuts from our 100-year-old black walnut trees.

We had to figure out how to get crackin’ (remove the hulls) so they can dry.

Best way to do that?

With a tractor, of course.

mouse house

While preparing to build my new hay barn, my crews came across this little nest underneath the straw in our old hay storage location. It’s a little mouse house!

Cute, but mice aren’t something we want living in our hay storage. This time, I’ll hang a sign outside that says, “No Vacancies.”

Ride Idaho

Just past Iversons, on a might past the Y, but before the Johnson place, here comes my sister-in-law, Sandy, after riding close to 400 miles on her bike.

ABOUT today’s photo-of-the-day

I found the brass canister at the bottom of this lamp as shiny as the day it was born on a shelf with my mother-in-law’s daintiest of memorabilia and travel souvenirs, things like glass figurines and hankies. “Huh?” I asked my husband. He explained that when he was …

by any other name

Do any of you have a partner who is constantly inventing new endearing names when referring to you? This morning hubby Nick called me “noodle padoogle.” His usual name for me is sugar, pronounced chew-gar. No cigar? Please share! I want to surprise him with some new names.

Prepping for B&B

It’s time to wake up the farm for our B&B season!

Family Tree Removal

It was like a scene out of Ax Men.

My guys were fellin’ trees.

Well, one tree that is. One large, rotting cottonwood tree that sneezed snow all over us every June, grew baby cottonwoods in all my flower beds, and became too fond of leaning in close to our new business facility. Also, last month when we got eight inches of spring snow, one of her biggest branches cracked and dangled over the pathway we all use to go to our barn library.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day

My little sister made this for Grandpa Nick to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. He hung it in his truck so he can see it every day. He says it’s easier to spot his truck now in parking lots. I hope there’s a pot of gold at the end of your rainbow today!

Angel Kisses

My son, Brian, is covered in angel kisses and blushes at the drop of a hat. Ugly spots? No way. When I was a youngster, I tried to…
