GIVEAWAY: MaryJane’s Ideabook, Cookbook, Lifebook

Thank you for dropping by my Raising Jane Journal to participate in my giveaways! We’ve chosen a winner for this giveaway already (click here for details), but don’t be afraid to leave a comment anyway. I love reading them. And stay tuned for more great MaryJanesFarm giveaways.

This copy of my first book, MaryJane’s Ideabook, Cookbook, Lifebook: For the Farmgirl in All of Us, was in our store window and ended up with a sun-faded cover.

But its insides are like new, and as every farmgirl knows, it’s never good to judge a book by its cover. Better to judge it from some of its online reviews, like this one from Amazon’s “Never Enough Books”:

“I’ve been a farmgirl, citygirl, tried the Mother Earth News route years ago, so it was with some skepticism that I checked out this book from my library. Don’t be put off by the reference to “Martha Stewart of the West” because the only similarity I can see is that both Martha Stewart and MaryJane Butters are hard-working women. I don’t think I have ever before read any non-fiction book as closely and with as much pleasure as MaryJane’s Ideabook, Cookbook, Lifebook. I couldn’t be satisfied with the library’s copy, but had to have my own, plus ordered one for my daughter-in-law. The pictures are beautiful, from antique implements to happy people. The verbal sketches of family, friends, and helpers is uplifting.

What struck me most about Butters was her positive attitude. She advocates organic farming and living, but rather than trying to force others to conform to her way of thinking and doing, she found ways to work with local farmers. In using local products, she has connected growers with consumers and built a business for herself, family, and friends.

I’d rate this right up there with Aldo Leopold and Sand County Almanac.”

To lay claim to this (sun-faded) copy, tell me what at MaryJanesFarm has inspired you … magazine, books, products, chatroom, or journal. We’ll put your names in a basket and pull out a lucky winner sometime soon. Check back to see if it’s headed your way.

  3. Absolutely love every issue. Read it cover to cover. Really nice to have since I had serious surgery about a month ago. So I have lots of time to enjoy the magazine or maybe the book! 😀

  4. Kristi says:

MaryJanesFarm inspired me to try new things – from homemade crackers (who knew I didn’t need Saltines or Ritz?) to a cute little teacup birdfeeder, I have more fun trying projects from your magazines. I am also (not always successfully) more inspired to live more healthfully – and recently started Probiotics due to an article I read last…fall? Summer? Thanks for all your hard work!

  5. Edee Killion says:

The MaryJanesFarm magazine is my favorite magazine and I look forward to reading it each time it comes. I feel like I am actually living in the country even though I am in the city. It reminds me of the country girl in me. Thank you.

  6. Carol says:

I was gifted a copy of the MJF magazine which featured quilting and ended up buying the author’s book. Of course I made many of the quilt squares which are still in a drawer. Some however were made into quilted placemats and gifted to a fellow farm girl. I don’t have the issue anymore but still have to book upstairs (I am downstairs snuggled under a blanket) and not about to run up to get the name of the quilt book.

  7. Peggy says:

I’m inspired by the crafts and the overall sunshiny effect it brings to my soul. It makes me happy when the skies are gray (or not). Love 💘 it all!

  8. Debra says:

I wish there were more Mary Janes in the world today, neighborly, helpful, full of ideas, the bathtub fun outside is one of my bucket list. It has been a pleasure knowing you through your books, magazines, and now online <3

  9. Vickie Rauser says:

Recipes, pictures, tips-and-tricks (things that make me say, “Huh, how ’bout that!”). I’ve always enjoyed picking up on new ideas.

  10. Sarah Marshall says:

Sun faded is a little like me. Many ideas about life and living help me find ways to expand my thinking and ways I can care for myself and others. Each arrival is great day! Thank you so very much.

  11. Michelle O'Banion says:

MaryJane Farms influences me in more ways than one – the STANDOUT is MJF keeps me connected to the TRUE SOUL (in its entirety) of who I am. I LOVE it all!!!

  12. Amanda Munford says:

MaryJane’s Farm magazine keeps me inspired with each new edition. I dabble in many things and sometimes I lose a little interest in one subject or another. Then I get the new magazine and it gets my creative juices flowing again.

  13. Elizabeth Lazor says:

    Magazine!!! Love it!

  14. Karrieann Warr says:

MaryJanesFarm has inspired me to be true to myself, that it’s okay to not be like everyone else. I love being girlie, wearing skirts, ruffles, ribbons and doing homemade things. I am not a farm girl by any means BUT my heart is! People thinks that I am a rarity for doing things with simplicity when I could just buy things already made. I could, I would say but I would be so bored with nothing to do… I’m happy to be simple and country in my ways…

  15. Violett says:

I love the magazibe. Many different things are inspiring and fun to Kristen more and I also like the photographs and various articles!

  16. Janice L Slater says:

I’m a ciry girl who would have loved being a farmgirl
I love planting and growing my own produce, which is accomplished on my patio in barrels. Always wanted to turn part of our big backyard into a tiered garden, but alas my husband must have his grass! When I found Mary Janes Farm magazine, I was instantly taken by all the wonderful ideas. Thank you for all you give through your magazine and organization! I would love to have the sun faded first copy.

  17. Rosana Beyer says:

I have a farm in east Tennessee and I grow organic fresh vegetables that I can, freeze, and sell at the farmers market. Mary Jane’s magazine has given me so many informational ideas, and thrifty ways to stretch my money.

  18. Libby Orenbaun says:

I have subscribed for several years and have kept every magazine. I enjoy rereading them from time to time. I’ve enjoyed Here’s the Thing stories, crafting articles, farm articles, cooking etc. We live in the country on a few acres. We only have a dog and two cats but enjoy the country life. I have a small garden and have blueberries and blackberries and enjoy reading the gardening articles. I even enjoy reading the advertisements!

  19. I found you when I stumbled across the Artists in Aprons issue in 2006 … when I read, “And I consider even my daintiest of aprons a symbol of female power.” I knew I’d found something and someone out of the ordinary. The magazine, the books, the online chatroom, the monthly posts from the farmgirls…they all inspire me. Now ‘m baking for our local farmers’ market store, we have bees, goats, and chickens. And yes, because it’s a lifestyle I always wanted to live, but I couldn’t find anyone else who wanted to live it…wrong, I just wasn’t looking in the right place!

  20. Karen Blair says:

The magazine arrives and I drop everything. I do make some tea, and then sit to read from cover to cover. The how-to’s, the recipes and chicken-related stories elate me. The farm girl blog is entrancing. I only have a rooster and one pigeon left, no more horses and only one dog, so the blog helps me recall “the good old days”. Turning 70 and dealing with major surgery, the mag and the blog lift me up, but especially the mag, as I can still cook, , crochet and craft. Thanks!

  21. Linda Stark says:

Mary Jane has inspired me to try things I never thought I could do resulting in making me more conscious of nature and life, as well as a better person and Nana. Thank you.

  22. Joan Price says:

Sun faded Mary Janes anything would fill me with joy! Your entire company and all it stands for is very inspiring!! I share my subscription with my doctors office, she says many people have said the want to subscribe, I so hope they do. Thanks for this great offer. God bless.

  23. Margaret Rohn says:

I love the MJF ideas and magazine. Even get for my SPG (saddle pal gal) friend so she can enjoy it too. She then gets it for her daughter. So from Kansas to Nebraska to Florida we all are tied together by MJF. Faded with age we have been friends for over 55 years now. We would all share the faded copy.

  24. Jean Dean says:

I love the recipes and information to lead a practical lifestyle. I am a farm girl and love that way of life.

  25. Vickie Daniel says:

I’m a new farm girl. I love your magazine and all your ideas.

  26. The magazine has inspired me. I have wanted to participate in other ways (chat room) but I’ve been trying to limit time spent on screen.

  27. Michele D Yates says:

Your magazine with the wonderful gardening information, cast iron cooking, the farm girl network and the crafts that someday I might tackle. Also, I love the idea that I can plan for how to take care of myself and garden as I get older. Those years are fast approaching.

  28. Melissa Robbins says:

The magazine inspires me on a day when perhaps the day has been so negative or difficult, retail can be tough. There was an article that said when our creativeness seems to be gone get out in nature. Since Im not near that little bit of nature the magazine fills that, the pictures the animals..ohh… I tell my husband Im going up to take a bubble bath. I look at each page and enjoy a smile returns that was reclusive due to a bad day. Simple joy.

  29. Cathy Whittemore says:

I have loved the magazine. So I would love to see what started all the magazines.

  30. Sarah says:

I love all of the ideas in both your books and magazine that inspire camping with children, or otherwise just plain getting out doors! Your outdoor cooking ideas and especially the cast iron recipes are priceless! Thanks for everything you share, Maryjane and team!! <3

  31. Kathleen (kathy) Martinson says:

I can just tell you, when I receive my copy, it makes not only my day, but my week and my month. I read it cover to cover, then am disappointed when I’ve finished it. Save my copies to read again and feel selfish, so, I’ve donated copies to the local library and the local food co-op. Love this magazine so much, bought subscriptions for daughters and granddaughters, sister too !!

  32. Linda Olson says:

I have enjoyed so many recipes from your magazine, most recently the Chili with Lime Cream. Also, I have sewn a few quilts from your patterns (and fabrics) – the milk can. I have also been inspired by garden tips. I passed along the homeopathic approach to anxiety to a friend of mine. Thank you, and would love to win this Idea Book

  33. Gail Wimer says:

I love reading your magazine with all of the country ideas. I enjoy the recipes and how easy you make the homemade things. I just enjoy reading the whole magazine and wonder what I am going to learn next.

  34. winnie jackson says:

I have loved your magazine for so many years now. I am so inspired by photo’s, recipes,
sewing projects and the stories. I am a caregiver for my husband and enjoy my time
with this periodical while taking a break in my day. Keep inspiring me MaryJane! Winnie J.

  35. I’m 54 and I have a pioneer soul. I love ranching, canning, crocheting and living as organically as possible. I bought MaryJane’s magazine about aprons. She inspired me from then on to live that simple life and she allowed me to connect to other women who were like me, enjoying aprons and living off the land.

  36. Mary K. MacTarnaghan says:

I have saved every copy of the magazine and especially like to read them while soaking in a hot bath or tucked in bed on a cold night with my jammies on. I take them to the woods, the beach, etc. I curl up in a porch chair in a sun patch and received inspiration and ideas to continue to grow and enjoy cooking, baking, quilting, letter writing and all the things that women used to do and we seem too rushed to have time for now a days. I would love the sun faded copy.

  37. Jenn Terwilliger says:

Hi. I was inspired because you actually sold agar! I had been looking for some to do some experimental edible savory molds and was so happy to find it there. Been on your mailing list ever since. Your emails always lighten my day no matter how bad the week has been. I would love the book and know just who I would share it with. Thanks for being there.

  38. Janeen says:

I’ve been subscribing to MaryJanesFarm magazine for a number of years. I find it very inspirational! I have a nice library of books to refer to whenever I want. And when I use any of your food products or cookware I feel like we are sharing a meal. Would love to win a copy of the book even if the cover is a bit sun faded.

  39. Loni McDonald says:

I have received your magazine for years.. I love everything about it and read every word. It has inspired my gardening, cooking, redoes of all kinds of things. Also, I am inspired by Mary Jane herself. Hooray to a hard working wonderful woman..

  40. Sharon Wegmeyer says:

You actually included an article I wrote about my love for Farmers Markets in one of your issues! At the end of that article I shared that I hoped to have a little farm one day. We now own 10 acres and will be planting our first garden there this Spring. As soon as our home in town sells, we will then be able to build a little home & outbuildings on our new land!!! PS All of our friends think we are a little crazy because at our age we should be thinking “retirement village” not “farm chores” . . . 🙃

  41. Katherine Neuschwander says:

Your magazines are PACKED with so much fun and great information! I just sent several of mine (I’m from Oregon) to my Sister and Niece on the East Coast, knowing they will enjoy them as much as I do.

  42. Kristy De Vuyst says:

I started a homestead 6 years ago with my kids and wonderful husband. Teaching my children when their food comes from how to raise plants and animals in a holistic and sustainable way. It’s not always easy but it’s the life we love. I find your magazine and sisterhood so inspiring and uplifting especially on the days we drift off track. I would love a copy of your book to further inspire us with new ideas! Thank you for the opportunity to win it!

  43. Barbara Krogmann says:

I love the recipes and crafting sections. They both inspire me to try new things!! Thank You for the amazing magazine.

  44. Alicia Shamblin says:

Mary Jane’s Farm is good common sense, practical knowledge that we all need now more than ever. All presentations help me to remember how to do things better, healthier. This magazine encourages me to slow down, enjoy my life, learn more, try better ways.

  45. Arie C Carpenter says:

This is such a guide post for me. I get encouraged to do many projects to check out new ideas and to just have more fun. I live on a small hobby farm in New Mexico . Its a bit arrid so any ideas were great. I have a flock of chickens so the articles add to their welfare. Thank you for adding to my farms life and to mine. age 76
